Obituary

John N. Albrecht-1896

HAS GONE TO REST.

JOHN N. ALBRECHT, AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS. DIES

One of Wahpeton’s Citizens Passes Away Peacefully Friday Afternoon – A Long Life, Well Spent – Many Friends Mourn His Loss – Funeral Sunday.

Friday afternoon at 1:45 o’clock, the death angel saddened the home of John N. Albrecht on Seventh street and the life of the kind father and husband passed away. During the winter he had been a severe sufferer from asthma, an affliction which he first sustained some years ago in Nebraska, and which a cold last fall had made more than he could bear. The funeral services took place Sunday afternoon from the family residence. Rev. G. Barnes gave the funeral address. The Masonic lodge and the G.A.R of which orders Mr. Albrecht had been a member, were present. The burial was performed by the Masons in the cemetery just west of the city.

Mr. Albrecht was born in Germany in 1838. He came to this country in his youth, and served three years during the civil war receiving his final discharge on the expiration of his term of service, Aug. 20, 1864, and with the title of sergeant in Co. E. 15th Ill., Infantry. After the war he married and settled in Barrington, Ill. Later he lived in Glencoe, Minn. and at Minneapolis. He came to Wahpeton in 1892. In his various lines of occupation here he won many friends through his open, honest manner and evident kindness of heart. But it was to his nearest friends and neighbors that Mr. Albrecht was most endeared. His interest in the little plans and activities of others and his spirit of helpfulness have endeared him to many close friends.

Mrs. Albrecht left Monday evening with her son-in-law H.J. Altnow, deputy clerk of court in Minneapolis, for a few weeks of rest in his home. She will also spend a short time at her old Glencoe home with her nephew, L.P. Albrecht. Misses Nellie and Lavenia remain in the city. The warm sympathy of the community is extended to the grieved family in their loss.
