Obituary

Glenn Allen-1897

Again the death angel has taken the only child from a home filled with happiness and comfort and attended by every advantage. Glenn, aged 6, only living child of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Allen, was called, Tuesday morning, to the spirit world. While playing about the snow-drifts in his parents’ dooryard, only a few days ago, he contracted a cold, which resulted in tonsillitis. He was subject to this disease, having had frequent attacks of it since the family came to Wahpeton. The family physician, accustomed to these attacks, soon had this one under control, and the third day Glenn seemed almost as well as ever. But meanwhile slight symptoms of pneumonia began to appear. During the next three days this disease developed in the usual way, and then it became complicated with spasmodic contraction of the larynx, commonly called false croup. Against this new symptom Dr. Quick, assisted by Dr. Darrow of Fargo, labored all of Monday night, but early Tuesday morning the tired chest refused longer to heave, and all was over.

Yesterday morning a few friends gathered at the house, where a brief funeral serves was conducted by Dr. Knox. The small attendance was due to the prevailing dread of diphtheria. The remains were buried in the new cemetery west of town.

Little Glenn was one of the happiest and most active children, and his death causes sorrow among all who knew him.

Glenn, the six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Allen, was sadly but sweetly taken away at 4:30 Tuesday morning. Death resulted from a complication of throat and lung diseases. His last illness came on a week ago Monday, but Glen’s strength had been impaired by a cold which had settled upon him for a week previously. Medical advice was had constantly and Dr. Darrow of Fargo was called in consultation, but the bright, sweet little life could not be saved. He was easy and conscious at the last. Their many friends extend their deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Allen in their hour affliction.
