He graduated in drafting, building and special architecture at the NDAC in 1923. He served in World War I in the 35th division and was wounded in France. He was a member of the American Legion.

After completing his studies at the AC, he was with J. Howard Ness, architect of Moorhead from 1924 to 1926. He also worked for Redlinger & Hansen and had some classes at the Science School. He started full time instruction at the school in 1927.

He served in World War I with Company E, 103rd machine gun battalion, 35th division. He saw action in the Argonne where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart for “meritorious service in action.”
