Mrs. Niels Arntzen Passed Away on Sunday Morning
North Dakota Pioneer Mother To Be Buried Here on Tuesday
In the passing of Mrs. Niels Arntzen, Forman, whose death occurred at the home of her daughter Mrs. R. A. Phillip dog Ruthton, Minn., at five o’clock Sunday morning. North Dakota has lost another pioneer mother. Three daughters, Mrs. A. O. Olson, St.Paul; Mrs. P. C. Olson, Wahpeton and Mrs. R. A. Phillips, were at her bedside.
Karen Anna Ingebritsen, was born April 14, 1855 at Tjotta, Helgeland, Norway. She grew to girlhood there and was one of a family of three children. Her late parents were numbered among the prominent people in that section of Norway. Her father was an educator in the schools at Tjotta. He was recognized as one of the outstanding men in Tjotta and was well known in North Dakota by many who emigrated to America.
In the year of 1877, the marriage of Karen Anna Ingebritsen to Niels Arntzen took place at Tjotta. In 1882, the decided to come to America and booked passage on one of the on one of the vessels of those days. Before arriving in the Boston Harbor sorrow overtook them when their infant son Arne passed away. Burial was made at Boston.
Coming to North Dakota the two pioneers decided to settle in Sargent county and filed on a homestead, six miles south of Forman in December of the same year. Here they established their home which they still own and call their home. Mrs. Arntzen has visited her daughter here many times and is well known in Wahpeton. Some twenty years ago Mrs. Arntzen contracted an illness which she had been trying to overcome through the years. Never at any time was she critically ill until three weeks ago when she was forced to go to bed, death coming as a relief to her suffering Sunday morning.
Throughout the years Mrs. Arntzen remained a builder in her community. She was one of the pioneers who promoted the building of the first Lutheran church at Forman. She continued active in the affairs of the church and remained a member. Friends and neighbors knew her as a power behind the throne in the early days. During her entire life she was a student, she was well informed and remained an inspiration in the ideas of right and wrong throughout the entire community in which she had lived a half century.
The remains will be sent to Wahpeton from Ruthton Tuesday on the early afternoon train. The body will be taken to the home of her daughter Mrs. M. C. Voves where it will be in state until the funeral services at the Bethel Lutheran church at three o’clock. Rev. J. C. Wisnaes will officiate and burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Four children have preceded her in death: Anne, 3 months; Arnie, 18; and Mrs. Agnes Schlester and Olaf Arntzen.
Pallbearers will be P C Olson, A H Burnson, M C Voves and A O Olson, all sons-in-law and Arntzen and Harold Burnson, her grandson.
Besides her husband, four daughters survive, Mrs P C Olson, Mrs. M C Voves, Mrs. A H Burnson of this city, Mrs.P A Phillips of Ruthann and Mrs. A O Olson, St Paul, 28 grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Dorothea Egebritroth who resides in Tjotta.
