Obituary
Niels Arntzen Dies Saturday At Age of 97
Rites Here Tuesday At Bethel Church For Forman Pioneer
Funeral services for Niels Arntszen, who died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Phillips in Ruthton, Minn., at the age of 97, will be held from Bethel Lutheran church Tuesday at 2:30 o’clock. The body will lie in state at the church. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery beside his wife. Mr. Arntzen was a pioneer of the Forman vicinity but had made his home of recent years with his daughter in Ruthton. He visited in Wahpeton often his last visit having been made about a month ago when he was able to enjoy a pleasant family visit despite his advanced years.
He is the father of Mrs. Martin Voves and Mrs. F. C. Olsen of this city, and has three other living children, Mrs. A. H. Burnson of Bredenton, Fla, Mrs. A. __. Olson of St. Paul and Mrs. Phillips. There are 29 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Grandsons will act as pallbearers at the final rites.
Niels Arntzen homesteaded near Forman in territorial days and started to develop the home there in 1882. He came to America from Norway where he acquired a university education.
During his long residence in the northwest he was a leader in his community in educational and religious matters. He organized and taught a Sunday school class before the little group of pioneers about Forman could employ a pastor.
In the early days he led the fight for free textbooks in the Sargent county public schools.
Himself he equipped with a university education as he realized the value of education and in addition to helping to promote and establish it in his own section provided and encouraged it on the part of his descendants. Two of his daughter, Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Voves, graduated from the Science School, six of Mrs. Burnson children are alumni of the school and pursued their education further elsewhere as did another granddaughter Isabelle, who is a noted musician.
