Obituary
A.C. Smith’s Mother Dies Here Wednesday
Mrs. Caroline Backenkeller, mother of A. C. Smith, of this city passed away at the Smith home Wednesday afternoon. She was born Oct. 11, 1861, at Galena, Ill., and was married there to George Smith. She was the former Caroline Valback. She came to Wahpeton in 1936, to live here with her son. She has another son, L. J. Smith, at Groton, S.D. One great grandchild and five grandchildren survive. She was a member of Faith of Christ church. The body lies in state at the Vertin Chapel here. Rev. Walter Jardine will officiate the services. Pallbearers will be Oliver Sprause, Charles Champion, Martin Mark, Lyle Hanna, Reginald Thurlow and Dan Swank.
