Funeral Services Set On Saturday for John Bakken
Funeral services for John Bakken, 68, longtime Wahpeton resident who died unexpectedly Wednesday, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Rev. Marvin L. Hartmann officiating.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Vertin’s Wahpeton Chapel with visitation Friday afternoon and evening.
Mr. Bakken was born March 30 1898 at Bristol, S.D., to Ole and Anne Bakken. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran Church at Bristol. He was raised and attended schools at Bristol and also attended South Dakota State University in Brookings. In 1923, he came to Wilmont, S.D., to become associated with his brother-in-law in the well drilling business. He was married to Marie Folstad on Oct. 14, 1929 at Sisseton, S.D.
Following their marriage, they came to Wahpeton in 1930 where he continued in the well drilling business in this area.
A member of Bethel Lutheran Church, he had been a trustee a member of the planning building committee for the new church, and belonged to Lutheran Brotherhood. He also had served as vice-president of the North Dakota Well Drillers Association and was a director of the Richland County Oil Co., in Wahpeton.
Surviving are three sons and one daughter, J. Darrell of Indianapolis, Ind., Douglas of Lincoln, Neb., Craig at home, Janice of Rapid City, S.D., and two grandchildren. There also are two sisters and five brothers, Mrs. T. R. (Mary) Peckham, Elmer, Olaf, Richard, Mathias and Clarence, all of Bristol, S.D., and Mrs. (Ben) Solaas of Spearfish, S.D.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
