Obituary
Mrs. Barber Dies Friday in Pittsburg
Memorial services for Mrs. R. T. Barber, 83, who died on Friday in Pittsburgh, Pa., will be held at First Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock. During more than fifty years of residence in Wahpeton, Mrs. Barber was a community leader, active in church, school and philanthropic work.
Lucy Purdon Barber was born Nov. 3, 1871, at a farm situated near Lake Dalhousie, Lanark County, Ontario. She came to the Alexandria, Minn., area with her mother’s brother and wife Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Purdon in 1881.
After preparing for teaching, she came to the Wahpeton schools and taught seventh and eighth grades for three years, then left to take a like position in the eighth grade at Alexandria where she taught for four years.
She was married to Robert T. Barber in 1897 and came to Wahpeton to make her home from then on. She was an active member of First Congregational church active in YTSCE.
Christian Endeavor Society; she assisted in young people’s work, service in the Sunday school for many years as teacher and superintendent.
She was elected to Wahpeton school board and served as a member for six years. The Woman’s Literacy club was organized the year before her marriage and she became a member in 1898 and was active until 1939 when she became an honorary member. She was active in PEO from 1923 on.
During World War I she was production chairman of the Red Cross chapter of Richland county. During the depression and drought, she became busy in welfare work and served as president of Wahpeton welfare society for seven years with help extending through Richland county. At that time the federal government set up agencies to assist. Mrs. Barber became Richland county chairman of the Civil Works Administration.
She is survived by her husband, Robert T. Barber, two daughters Doris, who is Mrs. Harry S. Flynn, Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Marian Britain of Glendale, Calif., and five grandchildren. A half-sister and half-brother in Ontario are C. R. McDonald and Mrs. Lawrence Brownlee. One child, Lois, preceded her in death, dying in childhood.
No flowers are desired at the memorial service. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery in the family lot. Arrangements are in charge of Vertin Funeral Home.
