Obituary

Eloise Barnes-1897

Little Eloise, the only daughter of Rev. and Mrs. G. B. Barnes, was pronouncedSaturday by Dr. Meckstroth and Sunday by both Dr. Meckstroth and Dr. Quick as attacked by diphtheria. All possible was done to save her and the little girl’s condition grew apparently better; but a previous illness of ten days had diminished her strength too greatly, and yesterday morning the weak thread of life parted.

Eloise was born at Campbell June 19, 1890. She began attending the public schools last fall. During her illness she was bright and active and on the last evening was interested in her school games and employments. Tuesday night, however, the dreaded diphtheria poison overcame her and throughout the last hour consciousness was nearly gone. She passed away at 3 o’clock yesterday morning, and in the afternoon was laid away, beside her grandmother in Rice’s grove.

Gifts of flowers and many kind letters of Rev. and Mrs. Barnes testify to the warm sympathy felt for them in their sad hour.

The community was shocked and grieved at the announcement of the death of little Eloise Barnes. We had a claim upon this little one by right of birth and babyhood. We cannot realize that the familiar little figure is gone from us for aye. She is remembered as the picture of perfect health. Rather shy, not much given to words, there came from the sweet face, from beneath the long lashes, a smile for us all. It seems but yesterday we saw old “Trim” standing in front of the store with a tiny tot in the buggy behind him tugging away at the lines and not a member of the family in sight. But old “Trim” knew the touch of the baby fingers and with but a backward glance stood still. How she loved old “Trim”! Dear little Eloise, have the gates of death been opened unto thee? The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.
