Son of Pioneer Minister Here Dies In St. Paul

George Barnes is Laid to Rest in Family Lot in Fairview Cemetery Thursday Afternoon

Graveside services were conducted at Fairview Cemetery this Thursday afternoon for Geo. Barnes, Age 70, former Wahpeton resident and son of Rev. and Mrs. Barnes, pioneers of this city. Mr. Barnes died in St. Paul and funeral services were held in that city, following which the body was brought to Wahpeton on the Empire Builder accompanied by his son, Harry Barnes, and interment was made in the family lot at Fairview following rites conducted by Rev. Caskey.

George Barnes was the son of Rev. and Ms. Barnes, pioneer residents of Wahpeton who will be remembered by many of the older residents of the city. Rev. Barnes was pastor of the Congregational church in pioneer days, leaving here to take over the duties of President of Fargo College. He later returned to Wahpeton for another term as pastor of the local church.

George Barnes received his early education in Wahpeton later attending Carleton College. For many years past he has been associated with a land company with headquarters in St. Paul and had made his home in St. Paul the past few years, previous to that living in Campbell.

He had been identified with the farm land business in the northwest for more than 40 years. He was one of the purchasers of land for the Northern Pacific railroad in Minnesota in 1901, buying more than 800,000 acres. Friends from Campbell acted as pallbearers and escorted the body from the train to its last resting place.

Mr. Barnes is survived by one son, Harry, who accompanied the body here and by one daughter. He is also survived by his younger brother, Fred Barnes, a Wahpeton resident until several years ago; another brother, Arthur and sister Eloise, preceded him in death.
