Obituary

Henrietta Barnes-1917

Mrs. H. A. Barnes passed away suddenly early Friday morning while on a visit with her son Arthur R. Barnes at St. Paul. She had been in the best of spirits the day before and seemed unusually well for one of her years. That night she fell asleep peacefully to pleasant dreams and life departed sometime later without arousing her at all. Mrs. Barnes was well known to many in the Northwest because her husband, Rev. G. B. Barnes, D. D., held various pastorates since the family moved to Wahpeton 35 years ago. She was especially well known here and at Campbell, Minnesota through their connection with the Congregational church here during two periods of four and seven years. Also they lived many years at Campbell. Her last two years she spent at the home of her son, F. R. Barnes in Wahpeton.

Mrs. Barnes’ maiden name was Henrietta A. Rich. She was born at Copenhagen, New York in 1847. During the Civil Was she became a war bride, her husband serving in the 187th New York Infantry. After the war they settled in southern Michigan, where she began as a clerygman’s wife. Later churches served were at Adams, New York and Ottawa, Illinois. From that city they moved in 1883 to Wahpeton. During the period 1888-1892, while Mr. Barnes was first president of Fargo College, they lived considerably in that city; thereafter he served churches at Valley City and Fargo, his last charge being Vine Congregational church at Minneapolis, where he died in 1909.

Mrs. Barnes’ charming and ladylike bearing, her happy was in meeting people, her practical usefulness to her friends and her beautiful unselfishness, exhibited in a typically feminine stature, endearing her to very many, who looked upon her presence as a benediction.

At St. Paul, where her sons George and Arthur have long been in business, chapel services were held in her memory by Dr. Painter, the pastor succeeding Dr. Barnes at Vine Church. The remains were brought that evening to Wahpeton and services were held Monday afternoon at the old church which they had done so much towards

establishing and upbuilding, especially during the pioneer days of the temperance, prohibition and resubmission agitations. Rev. R. A. Beard, D. D. another pioneer of the territorial days, who succeeded Mr. Barnes both as president of the Fargo College and pastor of the First Congregational church of Fargo, and was a warm friends of the family, gave the funeral address. He was assisted by Rev. W. H. Johnson of Campbell.

Surviving Mrs. Barnes and her brother Horace G. Rich of Copenhagen, New York, and her three sons. The sons and their families were present at the Wahpeton services, as was Miss Elizabeth Hicks, a daughter of Mr. Barnes surviving sister, Mrs. F. B. Hicks, of Grand Marals, Minnesota, who used to live here. Others present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cross, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Mullen, Jos Stearns and E. E. Nadeau of Campbell. The very great abundance of flowers at the casket in the church testified to the love which Mrs. Barnes’ noble life had awakened in many hearts. Interment was made in the family lot at Fairview cemetery.
