George B. Barnes D.D. died at his home in Minneapolis Tuesday morning at two o’clock. The news was received with deep regret by his hundreds of Wahpeton friends.

Rev. Barnes was ill about nine days but was able to preach Sunday morning, April 23. That evening he became worse and the next day was confined to his bed. His family consisting of his wife and three sons, George B. Barnes of St.

Paul, F. R. Barnes of this city and A. R. Barnes of Minneapolis were with him at the time of his death. He was 71 years of age and his health had not been the best for several years.

Mr. Barnes was identified with the First Congregational church in this city for many years. He came here first in September 1883 and was pastor of this church until December 1887 when he was chosen president of Fargo College, which school had just been established. He served as president of that school and as pastor of the First Congregational church of Fargo for several years and in 1894 was recalled to the Wahpeton church the petition which was sent him being signed by ninety members of the church. He remained here as pastor until March 1900. Since then he has served as pastor at Valley City and Campbell.

Three years ago he moved to Minneapolis to accept a call to the Vine Congregational church there. Several weeks ago he resigned his pastorate owing to his health, to take effect July 1. In spite of advancing years he had succeeded in making his congregation one of the most active of the Congregational churches in Minneapolis.

Mr. Barnes was born in Turin, N. Y. He served in the civil war and in 1869 was ordained in the ministry, holding pulpits in New York, Michigan, Illinois and this state. He was a most earnest speaker and was considered when in this state, the most able man in the ministry in North Dakota.

Funeral services are to be held at the Vine church in Minneapolis this afternoon and interment will be at Wahpeton Friday when services will be held in the church here. Rev. W. H. Medlar will lead in the services in Minneapolis and addresses will be made by Rev. R. P. Clarke and Rev. H. K. Painter. Rev. Gallagher will conduct the services here.
