Obituary
Mrs. Fred Barnes Dies Dec. 8th In Washington
Mrs. Fred Barnes died in Washington D.C., Monday, Dec 8 according to word received by Mrs. Jos. G. Forbes in this city. She was 87 years of age.
Effie M. Barnes was born in Rochester, Minn. She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and she was a teacher in Wahpeton prior to her marriage to Fred Barnes, who also taught here and later was county superintendent of schools and members of the land company “Barnes & Shafer.”
Mr. and Mrs. Barnes were member of the Congregational church and Magazine club and Mrs. Barnes was a prominent Women’s Literary club member.
Mrs. Barnes was a niece of Porter J McCumber, senator from this state, author of the pure food law who was in the Senate from 1899 to 1922.
Her son, Lt. Col. George R Barnes was killed during the Second World War. She leaves another son, Capt. Robert M. Barnes, USN (ret.) of Washington and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in the Navy Chapel in Washington D. C. .and burial of the ashes will be in June or Jul in Wahpeton, according to word from Capt. Barnes.
