Mrs. E. E. Bassett Pioneer Mother Dies Saturday
Beloved Woman Laid To Rest Monday from Congregational Church
Mrs. E. E. Bassett, 74, well known pioneer mother who spent more than 60 years in Wahpeton, died Saturday afternoon at St. Francis hospital, following a long illness. Services were read at the Congregational church at two this Monday afternoon, with Rev. J. Howard Rees in charge. Rev. W. M. Walton,
Episcopal minister and close family friend, read a prayer. Schmitt & Olson Mortuary service conducted the service. Interment was in Fairview cemetery in the family plot beside her husband, her mother and father and her two sisters.
Annie Morden Bassett, or Annie T. as she preferred to be called was the daughter of Sarah and David Morden. Born in London, Ontario Canada, on September 15, 1874, she came to Cavalier, N.D., with her parents in 1880. There her farmer farmed and she attended school. The Morden family came to Wahpeton in 1897, living on North Sixth street for many years.
Annie Morden married Elmer Ellsworth Bassett July 11, 1900. He was a jeweler, having purchased the business and building on Dakota avenue in 1897. The family have operated the same business for 51 years, the store now being managed by Wallace Morden.
Elmer Bassett died July 16, 1934.
Surviving Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are two children, Ariel (Mrs. Harold B. Riley) of Washington, D.C., and Raymond of Wahpeton. She is also survived by her brother Wallace of Wahpeton. Two sisters, Lillian and Ida preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bassett belonged to the Eastern Star, Rebekahs, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Pallbearers were Harvey Bisek, Sam Lock, Harold White, Eldon Lum, Fred Rohrenbach and Roy Hausauer.
