W. BEATTY DEAD Prominent Business Man of Wahpeton Drops Dead Thursday Morning Was in Apparent Good Health and was Stricken Down While at Work in His Office

While answering a telephone call in his store Thursday morning, R. W. Beatty was stricken with apoplexy and died a few moments later. Mr. Beatty was in apparent good health and came to the store as usual that morning. At about 11 o’clock he was called to the telephone and a moment later was noticed gasping for breath in his chair. Mr. J. F. Broderick and a traveling man who were present went to his assistance but he fell to the floor in an unconscious condition. Doctors O’Brien, Kauffman and Mockstroth were called and for nearly an hour tried every means to revive him, but their efforts were in vain.

Funeral services will be held at the residence, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock and the interment will be at Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Wood of Fargo, a sister of Mrs. Beatty, Mr. and Mrs. Squires of Grand Forks, and Wm. Boyd, of Wilmar, a cousin of the deceased are expected to be present.

Robert Wilson Beatty was born August 15th, 1855. When but a few years of age his mother died and he lived with an aunt until sixteen years old when he took a position with a civil engineer. He worked at this profession for a number of years, going from northern New York to Canada, then to Colorado. Later he lived for a short time in Minneapolis and came from there to Wahpeton eighteen years ago in June. He opened a fruit and confectionery store, which by his

hard work and strict attention to business he built up into the present large grocery house well known throughout the county. For a number of years he has been manager of the opera house.

He was married in 1890 to Miss Ella Taylor who survives him. He leaves three children, Robert, Harold, and Ella, aged respectively seven, five, and three years. No other relatives except cousins are living.

He was a member of K. of P and Workman lodges and carried some insurance in the latter. He was also a Mason but took his demit from the local lodge several years ago.

Mr. Beatty was always a hard worker and took an active interest in anything for the public good. During his residence in Wahpeton he held a number of minor public offices. He was city treasurer for two terms and was alderman from his ward for several years. In 1896 he was a candidate on the democratic ticket and though defeated the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best was shown by the overwhelming majority he received in Wahpeton.

In the death of Mr. Beatty the community loses one of its most prominent citizens and most successful business men. The news of his death came as a shock to many friends and acquaintances who have been in daily contact with him for many years and who little expected to see him so suddenly removed. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved wife and family.
