Obituary

Mother of Mrs. A W. Ponath Dies Sunday Morning

Mrs. Elizabeth Behm, 73 To Be Buried Wednesday from Immanuel Church Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Behm, 73, who passed away Sunday at 5:30 a.m from a heart attack at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Ponath, have been set for 1:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Ponath home and 2 o’clock at the Immanuel Lutheran church.

Rev. H. Schumacher of Tyler will conduct the funeral in the absence of the pastor, Rev. R. J. Becker who was called away from the city on account of the death of a relative. Rev. Schumacher was formerly pastor at Niagara, N.D., Mrs. Behm’s home for many years. Mrs. Behm had been seriously ill for six months and had been an invalid at the home of her son-in-law and daughter for the last two years. She had suffered from ill health for a period of about 20 years but was active and able to care for her own home until coming here to live.

Mrs. Behm was born in West Prussia Germany, June 5, 1859, and in the year 1883 on February 22, was married to Mr. Rehm who survives her. In a few months, Mr. and Mrs. Rehm would have observed the golden anniversary of their wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Behm lived in Germany for eight years and were the parents of four children when Mr. Rehm left for America, coming to Buffalo, N.Y. There he earned the money which he sent to his wife and four children so that they could join him. In 1892, the family moved to North Dakota, homesteaded in Grand Forks county at Niagara, and were among the first settlers there. Mr. and Mrs. Behm lived on their homestead continually for 36 years and upon retiring moved to Grand Forks where they lied for 11 years before them came here to reside.

Surviving are Mr. Behm and nine children, Mrs. F. R. W. Pickard, John Behm, Jr. William Behm and George Behm, all of Niagara, N.D., Mrs. Herman Pagl of Berlin, Wis., Mrs. Otto Derull of Grand Forks, N.D. Mrs. A. W. Ponath and Mrs. H.E. Bidgood, both of Wahpeton, and Miss Esther Behm of Grand Forks. Miss Behm has spent six months in Wahpeton assisting in caring for her mother. There were 45 grandchildren suviving also in addition to two sisters and four brothers who still reside in Germany. Mrs. Anna Bartman, Mrs. Gustine Winerich, John Martin, Henry and August Tetzloff. Three daughters, Elizabeth, Anna and Amelia preceded their mother in death at ages between 14 and 21 years. Mrs. Behm was the oldest member of the family.

Burial will be at Fairview cemetery and several friends of the family are expected to come here from Niagara for the last rites. All the children will be able to be present.
