Obituary

Fred D. Brown, 82, Wahpeton, Dies; Rites Held Sunday

Fred D. Brown, 82, retired Wahpeton businessman, died Friday at his home. He had been in ill health for several months.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Foss Methodist church, Rev. Everett C. H. Owens officiating. Interment was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Fred Donovan Brown was born in Detroit, Mich. Nov. 30, 1891, the son of Don and Susan Brown. As a young man he followed the trade of his father and older brother, becoming a tailor.

The family moved from Illinois to Staples, Minn., in 1900. Mr. Brown was married to Blanche Fowler at Staples March 4, 1914. They moved to Wahpeton where he worked for his brother in the tailoring business.

He enlisted in the Army July 27, 1918, during World War I. Following discharge, Mr. and Mrs. Brown returned to make their home, Mr. Brown then working for the Oppenheimer Men’s Wear Store.

In 1930, Mr. Brown graduated from the National Institute of Dry Cleaning at Silver Spring, Md., after which he returned to Wahpeton.

In 1933, he went into business for himself establishing Brown’s Reliable Cleaners. He retired in Oct. 1957.

Mr. Brown was a member of the Foss Methodist church and served as treasurer of the church board. He was also a member of the Rotary Cub, 40 et 8 and of the American Legion for 44 years.

He is survived by his wife; two brothers, Lyman Wichita Falls, Tex., and Ralph, Seattle, Wash. and two sisters, Mrs. Mable Gray, Miami Fla. and Mrs. Maude Doerr, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by a younger sister, Mrs. Florence Ghostley. Honorary pallbearers were Howard Lewis, Donald Lum, Eldon Lum, Lathan West, Pat Goggin, Ernie Stoudt, Lee Agnew, M. B. Zimmerman, George Holthusen, B. J. Williams, Al Rogers, John Flaa and Dr. E. J. Beithon.

Active pallbearers were Claude Fleenor, Harold Bullis, Dorval Schmidt, Verne Kasson, Harold White and Dr D. G. Jaehning.

Vertin’s-Wahpeton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
