Obituary
John Peter Brand, Richland Pioneer, Dies Thursday
Resident of this Vicinity Since 1879 Died at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Jost
John Peter Brand, a resident of this vicinity since 1879, died Thursday morning at 2:45 after a long illness. Cancer caused his death after years of suffering. For the past year, he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Jost, in Center township. John Peter Brand who came to Mooreton township to homestead fifty-one years ago, was born February 22, 1849 at Breman, Germany, and was the oldest of six children. He came to America with his parents at the age of six years. Peter Brand spent his boyhood and youth at Milwaukee and Manitowoc, Wisc. From there he moved to Hammond, Wisc., where he met Bena Bengart, who became his wife in 1875.
The young couple lived in Hammond until 1979 when they came to Mooreton township and homesteaded the farm on which their oldest son, Herbert, now lives. To this couple, three children were born. They are Herbert and J.L of Mooreton and Mrs. Charles Jost of Center township. There are fifteen grandchildren.
Mrs. Bena Brand passed away in 1918. For the past twenty years, Mr. Brand has been a resident of Wahpeton. A year ago, he became so ill that he was unable to care for himself and remove to his daughter’s home where he passed away.
A few years ago, John Peter Brand was honored by the I.O.O.F. lodge, the occasion marking his fiftieth year as an Odd Fellow. For more than half a century, Mr. Brand had been active in the organization. He was initiated in to a lodge in Wisconsin but was very active in the work here.
While definite funeral arrangements have not been announced, it is probable that the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at two thirty o’clock from the Odd Fellows hall in Wahpeton. Reverend R. D. Hall will officiate. Burial will be in the Wild Rice Cemetery.
