Obituary
John Briggs-1910
John F Briggs was born in Covelskill, Schoharie, N. Y., July 4th, 1818. He removed to Beaver Dam, Wis., in the year 1857. Settled in Traverse county, Minn., 1881. He was married to Jane A. Knapp at Hastings, N. Y., in the year 1848. His wife, four sons, Will J. Briggs, Urbane A., Claud, and F. W., and one daughter, Lucinda C. Briggs, survive him.
Mr. Briggs, physically was a strong and rugged man, the embodiment of health and strength. His constitution was so vigorous, his habits so exemplary, his mental activity so unimpaired, that though he had reached a span of years by but the very few, all who knew “Uncle Briggs” expected that he would reach many more yearly mile-stones in the journey of life. In this hushed chamber of death, we can more that ever realize the Bible truth that there is an appointed time for man to die, and that life beyond the promised three score and ten is but probationary. He had a striking individuality. He held the confidence and esteem of all. He was a friendly man. Strong in his likes and dislikes, ever despising sham and pretension, and loving the good, the true, and the beautiful.
He was a man of a hearty laugh, a heart felt handshake, and none looked oftener upon the sunny side of life’s perplexities and adversities. His kindness of heart gave expression to a genuine sympathy for the misfortunes of others, and extended the hand of charity to the truly needy.
At his country’s call he went as a soldier, enlisting in the 1st regiment Wisconsin volunteer cavalry. He served three years in the Civil War, and all through life was intensely patriotic. His long flowing locks of hair, and the contour of his face made him a good impersonator of the ideal “Uncle Sam,” and made him popular and honored comrade in the parades of the G. A. R. at their annual reunions. In his home a loving husband and a devoted father, in the community a good neighbor, and a law abiding citizen. Surely a man of varied experience, and ripe in years has gone from our midst.
After a short illness he died at the home of his daughter, Miss L. C. Briggs at Wahpeton, N. D. Mr Briggs was a consistent Christian and he and wife were members of the Methodist church. His last days were very peaceful and happy, and he was solaced by the comforts which only Christ can give to His own. The funeral was held at the home of his daughter at Wahpeton, N. D., Rev. W. T. Williams of Wheaton, preaching the discourse.
The numerous beautiful floral tributes evidenced the respect of his many friends and relatives. After taking this brief retrospect of his life we will do well to take introspect of our own lives, and see how we stand in comparison.
