Obituary
Ernest Brunner Rites Tuesday at Wahpeton Chapel
Well known Resident Dies Saturday at St. Mary Hospital
Funeral services for Ernest Brunner, aged 72, who died Saturday evening at St. Mary hospital after several weeks illness, will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock from the Vertin Chapel in this city. Rev. J. H. Rees will officiate at the last rites. Mr. Brunner had been in ill health since May 12th.
Ernest Brunner was born in Wies, state of Baden, Germany, May 16, 1877. He attended public schools in Germany. At the age of 15, he learned the cabinet makers trade by entering a four years apprenticeship at Freiburg, Germany. He worked at Badenweiler, Germany, and later at Basel, Switzerland. At the latter place he worked eight years at a first class furniture factory. In 1898 he married Emilie Panzer in Kandern, Germany.
He and his family came to the United States in 1904, coming directly to Wahpeton. He worked with the late Jacob Schweitzer at the carpenter trade for several years. In 1916 he was instructor at the State School of Science in the woodworking shop, continuing in that position for six years.
He then went into the U.S. Indian Service and worked for over thirty years under Civil Service at Wahpeton Indian School. He retired in July, 1947. On Jan. 1, 1949, he was awarded a citation and honor award together with a medal for commendable service with the United States government.
Mr. Brunner was a member of the Wahpeton Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the “Turnverein” an athletic organization in Wahpeton some years ago. He was a member of Wahpeton Odd Fellow lodge and well known and liked by a large circle of friends.
Mr. Brunner’s fine cabinet work was well known in this vicinity.
He is survived by his wife and five children: Hans, of Wies, Germany; Carl, of Bismarck; Emily, Mrs. Wm. Nienaber, of Fosston, Minn; Hedwig, Mrs. Edward Achter, of this city; Emma, Mrs. Otto Glander, Wahpeton. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild. One brother, Wilhelm Brunner, resides at Grand Forks, British Columbia.
