Pioneer Passes at Fargo Hospital Following Operation
Was Active in County Politics Since Appointment as Deputy Auditor In 1901 County Judge F. A. Burton, pioneer of Richland County and well known over eastern North Dakota, died at a Fargo hospital at 6:40 on Wednesday evening. Judge Burton had been operated on for gallstones 12 days ago and contracted pneumonia a week ago. Death was due to toxic condition of the system and heart failure.
Judge Burton came to Richland county in 1895 from Cass County, first making his home at Abercrombie. He was appointed deputy auditor in 1901 and served for six years. He was elected auditor in 1908 and was re-elected for eight terms. He was out of office seven years, when he was appointed county judge by county commissioners.
Judge Burton succeeded George Van Arnam as county judge upon the latter’s death. He was elected county judge at the last election. He is the second to die in succession in that office, both officials being longtime residents and well known pioneers.
Frederick Andrew Burton was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, June 1, 1851. His parents, William and Marcella (Nicholas) Burton were natives of that state. The family moved west in 1854 and settled on a farm in Allamakee county, Iowa. Judge Burton’s paternal grandparent, George Burton, was born in Rhode Island and his great-grandfather served in the Revolutionary War and eventually died from the effects of hardships he underwent in that conflict. The Burton family came to America originally from Wales long before the Revolution.
Frederick A. Burton was raised in Allamakee county, Iowa, attended the public and high school there and engaged in teaching for three years. He then became a grain buyer in Iowa and continued in that occupation until his removal to Preston, Minn. In 1888, he became a resident of Wild Rice, Cass county, this state where he was a grain buyer until 1895.
In 1895 Mr. Burton came to Abercrombie, this county where he resided until 1901 when he was appointed deputy county auditor and removed to Wahpeton with his family. In 1908 he was elected county auditor and serve in that office with honor for eight terms or 16 years. For seven years he was retired, when he was appointed county judge of probate to succeed Judge George Van Arnam, who died in office.
Judge Burton was re-elected to the office at the last election and was serving his first elected term at the time of his death.
Judge Barton was a republican in politics, an active member of Wahpeton Blue Lodge, A.F. & A.M. and a member of the state organization Sons of American Revolution. He was a member of the Congregational church.
Judge Burton is survived by the following children, Cora E., Gertrude M., Victor E., Edwin W., and Blanche E. (Mrs. F. W. Price) of Wahpeton. He is the last of his family, his brothers and sisters and parents preceding him in death. His wife, the former Ida Bigelow died on November 3, two years ago
No announcement has been made of funeral services at this time.
