Effie Barnard

Effie Barnard, 87, Wahpeton, died Saturday at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m., at the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Wahpeton. The Rev. Stephen Hanning will officiate. Visitation will be this afternoon and evening (Monday) at the Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home by the Wahpeton Order of the Eastern Star.

Effie Muir was born Jan. 6, 1892 at Antelope Township, near Mooreton,, the daughter of Duncan and Mary (McKinnon) Muir. She graduated fro Wahpeton High School and Valley City State College. She taught school in Richland County and in Jud and Williston, N.D. In 1931, she became deputy county superintendent of schools for Richland County, and in 1941, became the Richland County Superintendent of Schools. She served until her retirement in 1959.

In 1953, she married Ben Barnard, who began the electrical department at the NDSSS. He died Dec. 17, 1973.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ, the Zonta Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekkahs, the Fortnightly Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association and the Richland County Historical Society.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Marion Nissen, Wahpeton; a brother, Walter Muir, Wahpeton; and three nieces; two stepdaughters, Mrs. James (Janet) Love, MInneapolis; and Mrs. Pat (Julie) Patton, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

She was preced in death by her husband, her parents, a sister and a brother.
