Obituary
Man Killed By Gas In His Garage Ben Bergman Found by Wife Tuesday Noon
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Bethel Lutheran church here for Ben Bergman, 69, longtime resident of Richland county who died Tuesday. Bergman was found dead about noon in the garage at his home by his wife who had gone to call him for lunch. Dr. L. T. O’Brien, assistant county coroner, ruled death due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mrs. Berman told authorities that her husband had gone to the garage about 11 o’clock to do some work on the car. When she found him he was laying beneath the car on the dirt floor. The motor on the car was running.
Rev. P. A. Gisvold will officiate at the service and interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with the Masonic Lodge of Wahpeton conducting graveside rites. Vertin Funeral Home of Wahpeton is in charge. Pallbearers will be Ray Moss, Vernon Hektner, Arthur Amble, Fred Evenson, Henry Knight, and Carl Gauslow. Honorary bearers will be Elmer Ward, Henry Osen, Carl Fladby, William Hektner, Amandus Peterson and Joseph Hektner.
Mr. Bergman was born in Romsdal, Norway, Aug. 16, 1890 and came to the United States to Wisconsin in 1907. He later worked at the iron ore docks at Duluth and also on the street railways.
He and Bertha Bjornstad were married at Duluth July 20, 1912. They came to Richland County in 1918 to a farm near Mooreton, where they resided until 1964 when they moved to Wahpeton.
Since coming here he had worked for the Great Northern Railway on the bridge and building crew.
Mr. Bergman was a member of the Bethel Lutheran church, Wahpeton Masonic Lodge, and the Railroad Brotherhood of Maintenance Way employees.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Leslie of Wahpeton, Walter of Grafton and Kenneth of Wausau, Wis. Another son, Robert, was killed in 1945 while serving in Germany during World War II. The Mooreton American Legion Post bears his name.
He also leaves three sisters, two in Norway and Mrs. Mary Stokkeland of Vancouver B. C., Canada.
