Obituary
Ben Barnard
Funeral services for Ben Barnard, 84, of Wahpeton will be 2 p.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ, with Rev. Edward J. Krueger officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
Mr. Barnard died Monday at his home.
Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and evening at Vertin's Wahpeton, and at the church an hour prior to services.
Mr. Barnard was born March 3, 1889, at Toronto, Kan. He attended local schools and came to Wahpeton in 1922.
He is survived by his wife Effie and two daughters, Julie (Mrs. Pat) Patton and Janet (Mrs. James) Love.
There will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service Wednesday at Vertin's Wahpeton chapel.
Educator Ben Barnard dies at 85
Ben H. Barnard, 85, prominent educator and long time Wahpeton resident, died Monday morning at his home at 431 1/2 N. 6 Street. Funeral arrangements are pending with Vertin's Wahpeton.
A master electrician, Barnard had been licensed for over 45 years. He started the electrical department at the State School of Science in 1922 and taught in that department for 37 years.
Mr. Barnard retired from his college duties on July 1, 1959 after having served as Dean of Men. public relations director, alumni secretary and department head of the Electrical Department. The State School of Science Electrical-Electronic building was dedicated in his honor on Oct. 6, 1967.
He was a charter member and past chairman of the Red River Division of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and continued active in the organization. He served eight years as secretary-treasurer of the North Dakota Electrical Contractors Association.
He spent seven years as in inspector for veterans in North Dakota under the State Board of Higher Education, was a research consultant for the Legislative Research Committee on the nine state colleges and universities and was past president, served as secretary-treasurer of the North Dakota Vocational Association. He was a charter member of the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association.
He was a charter member of the Wahpeton Kiwanis Club and served as vice president, president, secretary and as Lt. Governor and Governor of the Minnesota-Dakota District in 1960.
Mr. Barnard is survived by his wife, the former Effie Muir, and two daughters, Mrs. Pat (Julie) Patton, Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Mrs. James (Janet) Love, Wadena, Minn. He is preceded by a son, Ben Jr. who was killed in World War II, and his first wife.
