Obituary

Hattie Cameron-1919

Mrs. E. S. Cameron Died of Apoplexy DEATH FOLLOWED 12 HOURS AFTER STROKE Died on Wedding Anniversary Came to Wahpeton Twenty-two Years Ago, and was Widely and Favorably Known – Survived by Four Children. Funeral This Afternoon. Mrs. Hattie Belle Cameron, wife of E. S. Cameron, former publisher of the Wahpeton Times, passed away at her home on north Sixth street Monday night, about twelve hours after being stricken with apoplexy. Mrs. Cameron had been in very poor health for a long time, a couple of years in fact, and for some little time her health had been in a critical condition.

Hattie Belle Ireland was born at Niles, Michigan, on August 3rd, 1863. She grew to womanhood in that city, and on the 17th day of March, 1886, she was married to E. S. Cameron, at the age of twenty-two. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron decided to come west to make their future home and after residing at other towns in the western states they moved to Wahpeton in 1897. Here they lived happily for many years, rearing their family. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive their mother. And here, after years of life among her many friends, death came to Mrs. Cameron on her thirty-third wedding anniversary.

The four children are Mrs. H. W. Sawyer, of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Walter G. Worner of Wahpeton; Max Cameron, in the service and now stationed at Camp Merrit, N. J.; and Miss Fern Cameron, at home. Max was on his way home when the message announcing his mother’s death reached Camp Merrit, a previous message having urged his immediate return. Mrs. Sawyer, who for several weeks had been planning a trip home for a visit with her parents, had left Twin Falls when the message reached that city, and up to Wednesday noon had not been located. It is presumed that she had stopped somewhere enroute for a visit with friends, not knowing of her mother’s dangerous condition. Efforts were being made to locate her and it was believed that she would be here in time for the funeral.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Congregational church, at half past two. Rev. Stillwell will conduct the service. Among relatives from out of town who are to attend the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cameron of Mankato, Minn., Mrs. Sara Young and Mrs. While of Niles, Michigan. Mrs. Cameron was a woman of modest tastes, quiet and home-loving. She was known as a splendid mother, a good neighbor and a loyal friend, and there are many people who will long miss her presence among them, and who extend sympathy to the sorrowing family.
