Obituary

Ira Carter-1903

Rev. Ira Carter, Deceased

Rev. Ira Carter of this city, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Persons, at Cambridge, Mass., last Friday morning. Rev. Ira Carter was born in Corinth, Vermont, Jan. 11, 1817, and died in Cambridge, Mass., Mar 20, 1903.

He descended from Thomas Carter, who came from England in the ship Planter in 1630, and settled in Salsbury, Mass. His mother, Fanny McAlister, was of Scotch-Irish stock that settled in New Hampshire. His father was Edmund Carter, and died when the deceased was two years old, which left him to make his way at the start of life without a father’s help.

Mr. Carter was educated at Newbury Seminary and New Market Academy. When in Newbury he was a member of he class in Theology started by Prof. Baker, afterwards Bishop. This was the beginning of what is now the school of theology of Boston University, which is now represented in all parts of the world by preachers and teachers. We believe at his death he was the last of that immortal class excepting one or two. His early life was spent in the ministry in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Mr. Carter was married to Elizabeth Shedd, and 50 years later their golden wedding was celebrated at Wahpeton. In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Carter came to North Dakota and helped to build up statehood, adding to their labor the

example of good lives. Two years ago at Wahpeton the devoted wife was laid to rest in our cemetery and it was his wish to take his last rest beside her.

Last Friday morning near the spot where in 1630 Thomas Carter landed on the shores of the then new world, his gentle spirit took its flight. Those that were dear to him were there to drop the tears of love and start the remains upon the last earthly journey to rest beside the one that was dearer than all others to him. In those prairie graves they will sleep together where others that were dear to them, in life, can keep green the sod that covers.

The death of father Carter ends a good life. In him was to be found a beauty and loveliness of spirit not often found in man. In him was combined a kind, loving husband and father and good neighbor. The world is better because he lived in it.

Memorial services were held in Harvard street church, Cambridge Port, Sunday, and the pall bearers were six students of the Boston School of Theology. The body of deceased arrived at Wahpeton this morning, accompanied by a son-in-law, G. K. Persons of Cambridge. The funeral is being held at the M. E. church this afternoon, Dr. Knox and Rev. Baker officiating.
