James H. Cherry Dies Suddenly At Three This Morning

Stroke of Paralysis takes Long Time Resident of this Vicinity

James H. Cherry, well known Wahpeton man, passed away at St. Francis hospital, Breckenridge, at three this (Monday) morning. He was stricken Saturday with a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. He had not been ill. He was 58 years old.

Mrs. Cherry is in Fairmont, Minn. visiting. Mr. Cherry came to this vicinity first in 1903, being a resident of McCauleyville and Abercrombie. Later the family move to Dwight and then to Wahpeton where Mr. Cherry was employed by the Great Northern railway in the roundhouse.

He is survived by his wife, Ms. Amelia Cherry, and children, Earl, of Minneapolis, Mrs. W. W. Cronkheite, West Mount, Ill., Mrs. Elmer Rovang, Roscoe S.D., Walter, of Fairmont, Minn., and Mrs. William Hellar of Chicago, Ill.

Because Mrs. Cherry and the children are out of town, it is impossible to secure a complete obituary. Mr. Cherry was a kindly sort of man, neighborly with everyone and was popular over the community. He had not been in ill health and his ruddy complexion was a familiar sight on the streets. He was taken suddenly ill and passed away most unexpectedly

He came to Abercrombie vicinity from Montevideo, Minn., close friends here say. He was born November 25, 1873 in Pennsylvania and married Miss Amelia Falk at Montevideo in 1895.

Wife Visiting Son at Fairmount, Minn., When Untimely Death Occurs Funeral services were held Thursday for James Henry Cherry, for 30 years a resident of Richland county. Mr. Cherry passed away a week ago. He was employed by the Great Northern railway. He was to have retired from the service this fall and was to have removed to Fairmount, Minn., to join his wife to make their future home there. Mrs. Cherry was at Fairmount when Mr. Cherry’s unexpected death occurred.

J.E. Cherry was born November 25, 1873 in Uniontown, Penn., and came to Dakota county, Minn, with his parents when a boy of 10 years of age. The family moved to Swift county, Minn., in 1882 and here M. Cherry spent the early years of young manhood and it was here that he met Miss Amelia Falk, his future bride, and they were married July 14, 1897.

To this union three children were born, in Swift County, Earl, now of Minneapolis; Pearl, now Mrs. E. W. Cronkhite of Westmount, Ill., and Mabel, now Mrs. E. J. Rovang, Roscoe; S.D. Thirty years ago, with the family, Mr. and Mrs. Cherry moved to North Dakota and settled in the Abercrombie vicinity where they engaged in farming. Elsie, now Mrs. W. F. Haller of Westmount, Ill., was born near Abercrombie, and Melvin, who preceded his father in death. Melvin Cherry passed away March 15, 1923.

Walter Cherry, of Fairmont, Minn., another son was also born near Abercrombie. With the exception of Melvin, all of the children and the widow survive Mr. Cherry. Later, M. Cherry move his family to the Dwight vicinity where he continued to farm. In January of 1922 he went to work for the Great Northern railroad where he was employed at the time of his death. Mrs. Cherry was visiting with her son, Walter, when her husband’s death occurred.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Congregational church with Rev. R. D. Hall officiating. Mr. Cherry was a member of the Congregational church, the Showcraft union and the Degree of Honor lodge.
