Obituary
Jennie Cleary
Funeral services for Jennie (Mrs. Thomas) Cleary, 87, lifelong Wahpeton resident, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Stanley Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.
Mrs. Cleary died Saturday at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center, where she had lived the past 10 years.
Special music for the funeral will be provided by Mr. and Mrs. Allan McTaggart, Mrs. W. W. Wall, and David Erickson.
Visitation is Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday until 11 a.m. at Vertin's Wahpeton, and at the church an hour prior to services.
Mrs. Cleary was born July 3, 1886, at Wahpeton, then known as Dakota territory, to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rice Sr. She graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1906.
She married Thomas Cleary Jan. 1, 1913, at Wahpeton. At age 17, she had joined the Women's Relief Corps, the auxiliary to Grand Army of the Republic, and continued as a member until her death.
During her 70 years of membership, she served all offices of the local chapter and also served as state secretary. She was also active in the Methodist church and taught Sunday School and choir.
Her husband, who was employed by the railroad, died in 1946.
She is survived by a son Loren, Wahpeton, and a sister Lillian (Mrs. Theodore) Dahlen, St. Paul. She was preceded by parents, husband, two brothers and a sister.
