SUFFERS AWFUL AGONY
Clark S. Comstock Dies with Spider Cancer after Seven Years’ Illness
Clark Spencer Comstock died at St Luke’s Hospital, St Paul, at 1 o’clock A. M. Saturday morning, July 21, 1900, of hemorrhage of the brain caused by cancer. He was first attacked by this disease seven years ago. The intruder was of the kind commonly known as spider cancer. Three times he had it removed with the surgeon’s knife, and once he used a plaster, before the final operation eight days before his death. At the time of the use of plaster the cancer had spread out in several directions, andhe failed to remove the largest tumor, as the suffering caused by the plaster was more than he could endure. He had been confined to the house for five months and in bed continuously for ten weeks when he was sent to St. Paul for a final operation. Two different cancerous tumors were cut out of his head, and he was recovering as well as could be expected, when the hemorrhage occurred, the cancer having destroyed the cerebral artery. After the cancer growth began to press upon his brain, his sufferings were awful, and he has at times been unconscious and in convulsions for as long as twelve hours at once. Few were strong enough to remain in the room with him and witness his sufferings.
Mr. Comstock was born in Janesville, Wis, December 23, 1859, but early moved with his parents to Howard County, Iowa. He came to Wahpeton nearly twenty years ago, and worked at the painter’s trade. Later he went north, and after a residence of two years in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he returned to Wahpeton.
Clark Comstock died Friday night at the hospital, St. Paul, of cancer, and the remains were shipped to Wahpeton, Saturday night and were laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery from the residence here, Sunday, Rev. Mr. Haker officiating. There was scarcely any hope for Clark when he left. Dr. Wheaton, we believe, cut the cancer out, but of course it seldom cures to cut a cancer out. Cancer is a blood difficulty and the blood must be righted to cure cancer together with treatment for the cancer itself. The widow and children have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
