Obituary

Mrs. Coppin Dies Here Today

Mrs. Marie Coppin of Wahpeton died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Calmer Carlson of Wahpeton.

Marie Oleava Coppin was born February 3, 1881, in a log cabin on the homestead of her parents, Ole and Martina Tew. The Tews had been pioneers in the Red River Valley, having arrived at the site of the present Tew farm by ox-drawn wagon, a few years previous to Marie’s birth. Marie received her formal education in the Dwight schools and at the University of Minnesota.

The hardy pioneer spirit of her parents revealed itself in Marie when she and two of her brothers, Olaf and Elmer Tew, homesteaded near Hettinger, N. D. Each of them lived in a sod house for the two years necessary to prove his claim.

On June 9 1909, Marie Tew was married to William Coppin. To this union were born three daughters, the eldest of whom died in 1919, at the age of 9. During most of their life together, the Coppins lived and worked on their farm five miles northwest of Wahpeton. This farm, which was part of the original Tew homestead, is now occupied by Mrs. Coppin’s grandson, Dean Carlson and his family. Mrs. Coppin’s husband preceded her in death in 1940. Mrs. Coppin is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Calmer Carlson, (Pearl) Wahpeton, and Mrs. John Brand (Doris), Chisago City, Minn., four grandchildren Ms. Ronald Nieforth, Seattle, Wash., Dean Carlson, Wahpeton; LeRoy and Carol Brand. Chisago City, Minn., two great grandchildren, Michael and Mark Carlson Wahpeton; one sister Mrs. Inga Simonds, Ronners Ferry, Idaho, and a brother Melvin Tew, Gildford, Mont.

Vertin’s-Wahpeton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
