Obituary
C.A. Donaldson City Photographer Dies Here Tuesday
Funeral for Long Time Resident to be Conducted From Methodist Church Friday
Charles A. Donaldson, photographer in Wahpeton since 1902, passed away at his home here Tuesday afternoon at 2:25 following a paralytic stroke earlier in the day. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church with A. R. Jones officiating. Interment will be made in the Fairview cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Schmitt & Olson funeral parlors until eleven o’clock Friday.
Mr. Donaldson was born November 27th, 1864 at Saratoga Springs, in Monroe county, New York. He resided in that state with his parents until about twenty-one years ago when he came to South Dakota with his parents. He later went to St. Louis where he was employed as a fireman on a railroad. A few years later he came to Wahpeton and continued in the railroad service. He accepted a position as fireman for the Northern Pacific out of Wahpeton.
February 22nd, 1902 Charles A. Donaldson and Miss Ida Ponath were joined in marriage. Mr. Donaldson gave up his work with the railroad and joined Mrs. Donaldson in her already established photographic business.
Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson have operated a very fine photographic business in Wahpeton over a period of years. Mr. Donaldson and wife have been awarded gold medals by the North Central States Photographic association for outstanding work in the portrait class.
Mr. Donaldson has been an invalid the past four years. He received injuries in an automobile accident in 1928 and has been unable to completely recover. During the past four years, he was admitted to hospitals on three different occasions and everything known to medical science was done to relieve his suffering.
Tuesday morning Mr. Donaldson was the victim of a paralytic stroke about ten o’clock in the morning. Mrs. Donaldson was alone with her husband when he became suddenly worse. With assistance he was put to bed and the family physician called. Nothing could be done to extend his life and a few hours later he passed away.
Mrs. Donaldson is the only survivor. Mr. Donaldson was the last of his family. In the death of Mr. Donaldson, Wahpeton has lost one of his outstanding citizens.
