Crash Victim July 24, Dies

6 Months Battle For Life Over For Local Youth

A six month long battle for life ended Monday when death claimed Dennis Drier, 19 year old Wahpeton youth, had been hospitalized at the St. Francis hospital since July 24 for injuries received in an automobile accident. He was the son of Mrs. Hilda Drier.

Immediate relatives were at his bedside when death came just before noon. The young man received a broken neck and hip, a sprained ankle and bruises in the accident which occurred south of Hankinson. He was thrown from the car as it rolled over when the car hit loose gravel on county road 1. He landed on the road beside the driver’s side of the car.

The driver and two others escaped serious injury in the crash. The companions were PeterShippe, Raymond Shippe, Jr. and Jack McKelvey, all of Wahpeton. The boys were enroute to Hankinson to attend a carnival when the accident happened. A Wahpeton ambulance was summoned and the youth were taken to the Breckenridge hospital for examination. Following the accident, Drier’s condition was considered satisfactory by attending doctors although it was known at the time that he would have to remain in the hospital for sometime. He had been failing recently.

Dennis Drier was born September 12, 1932, the son of Bernard and Hilda Drier. He spent all of his life here, attended school, and grew to manhood. Before the accident he had been employed by Brindy’s Creamery and the Wahpeton street department.

He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church and the boy Scouts. His father died April 11, 1948, besides his mother he leaves a sister, Mrs. Barney Olson of Breckenridge and a grandmother, Mrs. Albertina Popp of Wahpeton.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm from the Vertin Funeral chapel in Wahpeton with Rev. Robert Strutz and Rev. James Patton officiating. interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. The Vertin funeral home of this city is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Johnson, Matt Gilgenbach, Raymond Shippe, Jack McKelvey, Al Utley, and John Gisvold.
