Obituary
Betty Diekman was born on March 7, 1934 on a farm in Spring Creek Township near Callaway, MN to Edward H. Bullert and Olga (Helmer) Bullert. She grew up in the Callaway-Ogema area, 7th child in a family of 8 children. She attended local rural schools, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in Detroit Lakes, MN excelling in shorthand and typing.
She met Wally while working at the Edgewater Beach hotel as a secretary in Detroit Lakes, MN and they dated while he was finishing college at St John's University in MN. She was married to Wallace (Wally) Diekman in 1952. They lived in Belcourt, ND while Wally worked for the.Dept of Interior. They transferred to Fort Totten Boarding School in Devils Lake ND and then to Wahpeton Boarding School in Wahpeton, ND until 1985 when Wally retired. In the meantime, Betty worked at the Red River Valley Medical Clinic in Wahpeton until she retired in 1986.
They were members of the St John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. Following their retirement, they made their winter home in Mesa AZ, spending summers at their summer home on West McDonald Lake near Perham, MN.
Wally would always say she was a wonderful wife and mother and grandmother. She was so very artistic, designing and sewing clothes, painting, and gardening. She and Wally spent their favorite times at the lake home, making it their best combination of their artistic, construction talents and cooking. Their favorites were the legacy recipe of venison or pork smoked sausage and their special breakfast oatmeal, along with her rhubarb cake. The two of them were always happiest together, taking care of each other.
They moved to Casselton ND after selling the winter home in Arizona, living at Casselwood Independent Living Center, where they made such good friends, enjoying coffee time and helping with charity pie sales.
She and Wally moved to St. Cloud, MN, living with daughter Connie and her husband Brian in 2022. They loved having children, grandchildren and great grandchildren coming to visit and share stories and watching cardinals in the back yard.
Wally passed in 2023 at age 94. Betty passed at age 90 at the St Cloud, MN hospital.
They leave behind 5 children, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon at St. Augustine Catholic church in St. Cloud, MN on July 12, 2025.
