E. H. Ellis, prominent Wahpeton citizen and pioneer North Dakota resident, passed away at his home here this (Monday) morning just before noon. He had been ill ever since Mrs. Ellis passed away and for the past six weeks, his condition had been critical.

Funeral services are to be conducted from the house here Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 and from the Congregational church at 2:00 with Rev. James S. Caskey officiating. He was a member of the Congregational Church.

Mr. Ellis had lived in Wahpeton for the past 27 years, having come here from Valley City where he resided for any years, and before that he lived in Oriska, N.D. Edward Harmon Ellis was born in Chicago, Ill., Nov. 8, 1859, the eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Ellis. He grew up in Manistee, Mich., where his father practiced medicine. He came to North Dakota in 1884 and in 1866 was married to Minnie Hayden of Pierport, Mich. To This union were born four children, Ralph Hayden, of Fargo; Shirley L. of Wahpeton; Hazel E. (Mrs. E. W. Hamer) of Great Falls, Mont., and Eleanor (Mrs. R. E. Sonneman) of Harlowton, Mont., who with nine grandchildren, survive him. His own brothers and sisters had preceded him in death and Mrs. Ellis had died October 23, this year.

Mr. Ellis traced his ancestry back to the early settlement in Massachusetts and had in his possession at the time of his death aa powder horn carried in the Revolutionary War by an ancestor. The horn is beautifully engraved, the engraving having been done by the owner while a prisoner in a British prison. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and took an active part in their various activities. He was a kindly old-fashioned gentleman of the “old school,” well liked and highly respected.
