Obituary

Clyde Emery, 52 died Friday morning

Wahpeton businessman Clyde Emery, 52, died this morning (Friday) at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Wahpeton, the Rev. Steve Hanning officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.

Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening beginning at 3 p.m. with an 8 p.m. prayer service at the Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home. There will also be visitation for the hour prior to the service at the church.

Emery was the owner of the Emery Greenhouse in Wahpeton. He was also responsible for planting the flowers and shrubs in Wahpeton's Dakota Avenue medians. He also planted the flowers at the North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton.

He was born Aug. 15, 1927 at Grand Prairie Township, near Valley City, the son of Amos and Emma Emery. He attended school at Valley City, the Valley City State College and the Colorado School of Floral Design, Denver, Colo. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and moved to Wahpeton in December, 1959 to work at Wahpeton Floral. He married Phyllis E. Walter, LaMars, on June 10, 1951. He worked in a greenhouse owned by Harold Osen, purchasing the greenhouse from Osen in 1953. Besides operating the greenhouse, he was washhouse lead man at the Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative during the winter.

Because of his part in the planting of the flowers at the Science School, Emery and his wife were chosen to be the Science School's homecoming grand marshals in 1978.

He was a member and trustee of the United Church of Christ, a member of the church choir, the Science School's 300 Club, the Eagles, American Legion and Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Diane, Mrs. Steve (Penny) Helgeson and Mrs. Randy (Jan) Neppl, all of Wahpeton; four grandchildren; one brother, Neal, Valley City; and three sisters, Mrs. George (Ruth) Swartsley, Salem, Ore., Mrs. Art (Gladys) Ekblad, Minot, and Mrs. Boyd (Nancy) Peterson, Issaquah, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
