MOSES FERGUSON DEAD; WAS PIONEER SETTLER Came to Richland County About Civil War Time – Is Survived By Large Family of Children Moses Ferguson, one of the oldest of old timers, passed away at the Wahpeton Hospital at 10:30 p. m. Wednesday evening, after a long illness. He was 78 year so of age, and more that fifty of those years were spent in Dakota, mostly in Richland and Wilkin counties. He was born in Wisconsin, probably near Sheboygan, although his wife was a bit uncertain of that point on, March 15, 1844. About the time of the Civil war he came to Dakota territory, and shortly became a “mule skinner” or freighter on the route between Fort Abercrombie and Bismarck. No further information is available until 1882, when he married Miss Minnie Pielke of Wahpeton. They lived about twenty years on a farm south of Abercrombie, then moved to a farm six miles north-east of Breckenridge where they resided for about fifteen years, until coming to Wahpeton to live some five years ago.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, ten of whom survive. The oldest son William died several years ago as a result of an accident. The others are Ed Ferguson, with his sister Mrs. Dora Martin and her husband reside on the hold home farm northeast of Breckenridge; Mrs. Mary Ellis, who at the time of her father’s death was enroute to Washington state to make her home; Mrs. Ed Olson of Mooreton; James, farming west of
Wahpeton, Austin, also farming north of Breckenridge; John address unknown; Mrs. Irene Martin of Wahpeton; and Thomas and Minne Ferguson, living with their parents here. A brother, James Ferguson, resides at Perham, Minn., and there are three sisters surviving, one living in Kansas, the other in California, according to Mrs. Ferguson’s recollections. Funeral services will be conducted, by Rev. F. H. Bergman at the Congregational church Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Pall Bearers will be old time friends and acquaintances. Joe Blanding, Henry Sweep, Daniel McCarty, Jack Broderick, J. B. Yates and Frank Budack.
