Henry A. Field, Wahpeton leading citizen, died unexpectedly Friday morning from a heart attack. Funeral services are to be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 from the Congregational church here. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery While Mr. Field had been in ill health in years past, he seemed to have completely recovered from the effects of an operation two years ago and a physical check-up a few days ago indicated his health to be good. He had told friends that he was feeling the best he had in years and great was the astonishment of the group awaiting his appearance at the Congregational church dinner Thursday evening at 6:30 when news came that he had suffered a heart attack and his condition was critical.
Mr. Field was a trustee of the Congregational church, a position he had held for many years, and was on his way to the annual meeting of the church which was being held at the time of his sudden illness. Mrs. Field was at the church. She is clerk of the church. Mr. Field had left her there and went home in the car to clean up before coming to dinner. It is thought that he had some difficulty with the car. At any rate, he left the car and started to walk down to the church.
On Sixth Street north near the C. K. Kocourek home, he collapsed and fell. He tried to support himself against a tree but fell to the ground. A passer by called a doctor and he was taken into the Kocourek home. Mr. Field was unconscious. Mr. Kocourek came to the church for Mrs. Field and after a time Mr. Field was taken to his home.
He went to sleep shortly after midnight and awoke an hour later. He went back to sleep not to awaken again. Mrs. Field came into the room just before eight in the morning and discovered that he had passed away.
Henry A. Field was born in Fergus Falls, Minn., Nov 29, 1888. As a boy he worked for the Fergus Falls Journal and learned the printing business there. He came into North Dakota after he graduated from high school to work for the late J. W. Schnitzler of the Mohall, N.D., Tribune. It was while employed there that he met Jennie White. Mr. Schnitzler’s sister-in-law. They were married December 20, 1910, at Bottineau. In May, 1914, he came to Wahpeton to enter the employ of the Globe Gazette Printing company. He was employed as a printer until 1919 when he became plant superintendent, a position he occupied at the time of his death. He was a stockholder in the company.
During his long residence in Wahpeton he had endeared himself to his home town. He served as a state senator from the 12th district from 1930 to 1934. He was a member of the board of education for several years and served as president of the board. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Congregational church, had held several offices in the church, being one of the church’s most tireless workers.
