Obituary
George Fischer, 71, Former County Auditor, Dies Sunday
George J. Fischer 71, well known Richland County Citizen, died suddenly late Sunday afternoon at his home of a heart attack.
Requiem Mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. John’s Catholic Church, Rev. George Mehok celebrant.
A Bible Vigil service will be at 8 Tuesday night and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8:30 p.m. with visitation Tuesday afternoon and evening from Vertin’s Wahpeton Chapel.
The Wahpeton American Legion Post will conduct military rites.
Born in St. Paul, Aug. 31, 1893, to parents Baptist and Mary Fischer, Mr. Fischer came to Lidgerwood when he was three years old. He was raised and attended schools there. In 1913, he moved to Wahpeton and enlisted in the National Guard Company I 164th Infantry. In 1914, he went with the Company to the Mexican Border and soon afterward he went with the Company to France as a sergeant.
He served as a lieutenant in France for 20 months. Upon his return to this country, he went to work in his father’s store in Lidgerwood. A year later he returned to the auditor’s office under F. A. Burton and was named deputy auditor. He was deputy auditor until 1924 when he was elected County Auditor.
He was married to Minnie Mathiesen, Nov., 6, 1923, in Wahpeton. Mr. Fischer was a Captain of Company I from June 1931 until 1936. He was responsible for the reorganization of Company I in 1921 after the unit was mustered out after World War I.
He was treasurer of the Richland County Salvation Army for 15 years, County Red Cross official for many years, vice-president and member of the Board of Directors of the Wahpeton National Bank for several years. He also was a past president of the North Dakota Auditor’s association, former secretary of defense council for the American Legion 10th District and was Lieutenant Colonel in the North Dakota State Guard. He was the first Grand Chef de Guerre of the Wahpeton Forty and Eight.
Besides his wife, Minnie, he leaves one daughter Mrs. E. S. (Margaret) Oleson of Wellesley, Ontario, Canada; one son, Bruce E. of Minneapolis, five grandchildren; one brother, Peter S. of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sister, Mrs.Otis (Mary) Pritchard of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Adolph (Susan) Herman of Lidgerwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter Gloria, who died in 1947 in California.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John Peschel, John Jacobchick, Art Lee, Dan S. Riley, Al Lindor, and Dr. Lloyd Best. Honorary pallbearers will be J.R. White, Elmer Anderson, Leo Novetzke, George Holthusen, Martin Voves, R.J. Hughes and Vernon Hektner.
