Obituary

Josef Fischer

The funeral for Josef Fischer, 54, of Wahpeton will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Stanley K. Mueller officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Mr. Fischer died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon in Wahpeton of an apparent heart attack.

Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home chapel with a prayer service at 8 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Casket bearers will be Duane Held, Leander Lelm, James Grosz, Herman Hielman, Frank Meyer, John Kucher, Charles Christensen, and Francis Fink.

Organist will be Jerald Stewart and vocalist will be Roland Nies.

Josef Fischer was born Dec. 22, 1921 at Graslitz, Germany, to Adolf and Anna (Unger) Fischer. He grew up there and attended local schools.

He served in the German army as a paratrooper, was captured by the Americans and was eventually interred as a prisoner of war in the U.S. When he returned to Germany he was never able to locate his three sisters and two brothers.

He married Hilda Lanzke, Feb. 8, 1947 at Bamberg, Germany.

Because he liked the United States, he came to Fairmount, N.D. in 1956 to make his home under the sponsorship of the Methodist Church. He was employed in the Raymond Anderson Garage in Fairmount as a mechanic. In April 1957, the family moved to Wahpeton where he began employment with Smith Motors.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Wahpeton Eagles.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Arnold of Wahpeton; and three daughters, Trudy of Fargo and Wanda and Helen at home.

he was preceded in death by his parents and infant twin sons in Germany.
