Gloria Fischer Dies in California Train Wreck
Beloved Young Lady’s Body To Be Returned Here For Interment
Gloria Beryl Fischer 20, one of Wahpeton’s most talented and best loved young women, met tragic death in Los Angeles, Calif. Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision of two Pacific Electric two-car trains.
Word received Saturday by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Fischer, Wahpeton, indicates, Miss Fischer met her untimely death in a crash, describe as the worst in the history of the transit lines in Los Angeles. She was unmarked, according to the message, except for a blow on the head which killed her at once.
Miss Fischer’s body is homeward bound, accompanied by her uncle, Peter S. Fischer, resident of Los Angeles. They were expected to leave Los Angeles this evening and will probably arrive here Thursday evening on the Empire Builder. Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon from the Methodist church. The hour has been tentative set at two but the exact hour will be announced later in the week. Rev. C. H. Meier will officiate and Vertin Funeral Chapel of Wahpeton will be in charge.
Gloria Beryl Fischer went to Los Angeles in October to take a position as secretary to one of the officials of the Rexall Drug Company general offices. She made her home with her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Sands.
She had left her place of employment and apparently was on her way home Saturday afternoon on the electric train, when it crashed head-on into another train. Cause of the wreck was believed to be a faulty switch, and occurred at the entrance to a subway.
Press reports this morning indicated there were more than 35 persons injured in the crash but only one killed. Several serious injuries were reported including broken backs and bones among the passengers. The crash occurred at the peak of business on the transit line Saturday afternoon when workers from all over the city were returning home.
Gloria Beryl Fischer was just 20 years old. During her childhood she joked about having two birthdays, her real and her half, that is the half mark of the years which would be Feb 8, Saturday, the day on which she will be buried.
She was born in Wahpeton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fischer. Mr. Fischer is vice president of the National Bank in Wahpeton.
She was born Aug. 8, 1926, and graduated from Wahpeton high school in the spring of 1944 and from the State School of Science in 1946.
Later she went to Fargo where she was employed in the Veterans Administration. Because of her success, she was sent to Dickinson where she opened a branch office in October, she resigned to go to California.
During her school days and before, she formed a friendship with a group of Wahpeton girls which has grown to be an unofficial group. The girls are scattered now but it is expected they will reassemble here for the service Saturday. The group called themselves the KA group and through the years they have grown ever closer.
She was very active in school and Girl Scout work, serving as a leader in late years.
She was a cheer leader in high school and college and was president of the Sacajawea Club at Science.
Gloria Beryl Fischer was a member of the Methodist church and had sung in the choir for some time before leaving.
Surviving besides he grief-stricken parents are a younger sister, Margaret and a brother, Bruce, both in school in Wahpeton. Her grandfather, B. Fischer, a well known Lidgerwood businessman is coming here today to be with his son and his family in their hour of sorrow.
