Obituary

Funeral Service for Mrs. Forbes Will be Today

Funeral services for Mrs. Jos. G. Forbes will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from the Congregational church here with Rev. B. B. Curtis officiating. She had been a Wahpeton Resident since 1899, the wife of Jos. G. Forbes, an attorney here until about ten years ago, when he retired because of ill health and old age.

Mrs. Forbes died at the Nash Rehabilitation Center Home here Friday. She had suffered a paralytic stroke about a week ago but up until that time had been in good health. Mr. Forbes is will to the point of unconsciousness. Until recently, they had maintained their home but the exigencies of Mr. Forbes’ age made it necessary to move to the rest home were Mrs. Forbes continued her friendly ways.

Mary Catherine Watson was born July 27, 1873, at Marshall, Minn. and attended schools there. She was married October 21, 1893, to Joseph G. Forbes at Marshall, where Mr. Forbes taught school

The couple moved to Lake Benton, Minn., where Mr. Forbes took a position as principal of schools and practiced law after school hours. He became Lincoln County attorney. In 1899, they came to Wahpeton where her husband entered a law partnership with the late Senator Porter J. McCumber. Later Dan R. Jones was a partner then Arnold C. Forbes now judge of the 17th Minnesota Judicial district, of Bemidji, Minn. entered the partnership with the late C. E Lounsbury, the firm being known as Forbes, Lounsbury and Forbes.

Later, Vernon D. Forbes, another son, entered the firm and Mr. Lounsbury left for Chicago where he practiced law. Vernon Forbes left for Fairbanks; Alaska being appointed a federal judge there. Another son, Stanley Forbes, died in 1923, and it is in the family lot beside their son that Mrs. Forbes will be laid to rest.

Mrs. Forbes was active in work of the Congregational church and in the North Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was made a life member of the Eastern Star in 1951, the 50th year of her membership.

She is survived by her husband, who is 92 years old, a son, Judge Arnold Forbes, of Bemidji, Minn., another son, Judge Vernon D. Forbes, now a bank official at Fairbanks, Alaska; sister Mrs. Will MacLafferty, Mena, Ark.; daughters-in-law Ruth Forbes and Sybil L. Forbes, three grandchildren, Joseph P. Forbes and Carol Forbes of Bemidji, and Kathy Forbes of Fairbanks.

Seven sisters and one brother preceded her in death as did a son, Stanley.

Vertin-Schmitt-Poulton are in charge of arrangements.

Special music will be provided at Mrs. Forbes’ request by Mrs. Sigvold Thompson of Moorhead, who will play a violin solo, with Mrs. Fred Brown the accompanist.

Active pallbearers will be Chas. J. Coghlan, Harvey Bisek, Dr. H. H. Pfister, Ted Stelten, Dale McMichael and Donald Nash. Honorary pallbearers will be S. H. Murray, Dr. E. J. Beithon, Ora Gunderson, Donald Lum, R. J. Hughes and Judge Schneller.
