Obituary

Mrs. Herman Gast Rites To Be Conducted Today

Funeral services for Mrs. Herman (Martha) Gast, 87, lifetime Richland County resident, will be this afternoon (Thursday) at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, the Rev. Edward J. Rutter officiating.

Mrs. Gast died at her home in Wahpeton Monday.

She and her twin sister, Mrs. Herman (Justine) Gehler were reported to be North Dakota’s oldest twins.

Martha Stoltenow was born at Great Bend Feb. 17, 1879 and was married there Nov. 5, 1900. She was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Hincks. The couple had farmed in Brandenburg Township and later in DeVillo Township before moving to a farm near Wahpeton in 1916. He died in 1938. She moved into Wahpeton in 1943.

Surviving are 11 sons and daughters, Mrs. Ludwig (Ella) Matt and Edward Gast, both Breckenridge; Walter, Willmar; Herman, Richard, Herbert, Mrs. Wallace (Lucille) Olson and Mrs. Theodore (Helen) Leland, all Wahpeton; Leonard of St. Paul; Mrs. Lester (Leona) Ward of Mooreton; Mrs. Orville (Myra) Jensen of Fergus Falls; 32 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.

Organist will be Mrs. William Enochson. Syver Wateland and Mrs. Toby Johnson will be vocalists with Mrs. Wateland as organist. Active pallbearers all sons will be Edward, Walter, Herman, Leonard, Richard and Herbert Gas. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Darrel Gast, Paul Gast, LeRoy Leland, Wayne Ward, Frederich Olson and Elroy Gast.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
