MASONS CONDUCT RITES FOR BRO. ORTON GIFFORD RESIDENT OF WAHPETON SINCE 1884 PASSES AWAY THURSDAY CHARLES E. WOLFE GIVES A BEAUTIFUL ADDRESS Pays Tribute to Goodness Shown in Life of Brother and Friend Gifford

The death of Orton Gifford of Wahpeton occurred late Thursday evening, following a period of suffering from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He remained conscious to the end, but was unable to speak and almost completely paralyzed since the stroke which occurred ten or twelve days before. Funeral services were conducted by Wahpeton Lodge No. 15, A. F. & A. M., at the home on north 8th street at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon, with Worshipful Master R. W. Gowland conducting the Masonic service. Rev. W. L. Bennet as Chaplain and J. Walter Green as Senior Warden. A. N. Paulsrud sang a beautiful solo, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. H. H. Pfister. Interment was in Fairview cemetery. The funeral address was delivered by Judge Chas. E. Wolfe.

Orton Gifford came to Wahpeton in 1884, coming to visit his father who at the time conducted a furniture store here. He was employed by Register of Deeds J. M. Ruggles as clerk in the registrar’s office, until the close of his own term of office, in 1891 or 1892. He was away from Wahpeton for some four or five years, most of which was spent in Chicago, with which exception he has been continuously a resident of this city. He was the owner of the Guarantee Title and Abstract Co., the business in which he was engaged up to the time of his death.

Orton D. Gifford was born at Dunkirk, New York, August 4th, 1859. He came to North Dakota in 1883. On October 22nd, 1885, he married Jessie Prushaw, who survives him. He leaves also his daughters, Hazel Johnson and Cecile Stull, both of them mothers. He was a member of Wahpeton Lodge No. 15, A. F. & A. M., being initiated therein December 31st, 1901, and made a Master Mason April 13th, 1906.
