Obituary

Frank Gordon-1914

RIVER CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM Little Frank Gordon Goes in Bathing at the Deep Sandbar And is Drowned BODY CARRIED 10 MILES Away By the Swift Current and Not Recovered Until Four Days Afterwards The deep sandbar just off the east end of Horse-Shoe Park was the scene of another tragic event last Wednesday evening just after the Times had gone to press. Little Frank Gordon, the nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Gordon, who reside on Utah ave., had gone to the river after his dismissal from school and in company of several other boys of near his own age had gone in bathing. But he had not yet learned to swim, and neither had any of his companions, and getting beyond his depth the swift under current at that point quickly carried him off his feet and he disappeared from sight, never to be seen alive again.

His little companions being unable to be of any assistance themselves ran with all their might into the city and spread the alarm, and Chief of Police Powrie and Sheriff Budack, with a lot of other men hurried to the spot and a diligent search was at once instituted for the body, but it could not be found. The search was continued all night and next day but to no purpose. Nets were spread in the river, it was thought far enough down to catch the body if it reached them, but the current was swifter than was supposed and the body appears to have been already carried below. Not until Sunday afternoon was body discovered, floating at the top of the water opposite the Veulek farm four miles north of the city as the crow flies and perhaps fifteen miles away following the bends of the river. It was taken in charge by the undertaker.

The Gordon family only last fall came here from South Dakota, having bought a farm northeast of Breckenridge, but resided in the city in order to take advantage of our schools for their children. The home was on Utah ave., but at the time of the sad accident the father was at work on the farm and had to be notified by phone and messenger, white the mother almost crazed with grief at the home mourned deeply over the sudden loss of her bright little boy.

The funeral took place from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon and was attended by a deeply sympathizing people and the whole city feels very deeply for the parents in their hour of deepest sorrow. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Sewrey.
