~ L.E. Guess Dies In Fargo, Rites Tuesday ~
Lawrence E. Guess, 63, Wahpeton resident for 29 years and district manager of the Otter Tail Power Company here until his retirement a year ago, died Thursday at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo where he had been a patient for the past 23 days. He had been in failing health for two years.
Funeral service has been set for Tuesday with the Wahpeton American Legion Post in charge of military rites. Service will be at 2 p.m. from the Evangelical United Brethren Church here with Rev. Robert Strutz officiating. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. The Vertin Funeral Home of Wahpeton is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Clyde Matheson, William Meyenburg, R.L. Hawes, Gordon Olson, Ed Allen and Walter Schmidt.
Mr. Guess was born in Hartford, Wis., July 15, 1889, where he attended schools and grew to manhood. He was educated there and was in the tailoring business with his brother for a time. Later he attended the Northwestern School of Engineering in Chicago.
He entered the U.S. Army June 18, 1918, and was discharged Dec. 11, 1918. He served as a sergeant with Company D 46th Bn. of the U.S. Guards.
Following his return from the army he married Dorothy Stewart at Hudson, Wis., April 7, 1920. He was in the electrical business at Nashwauk, Minn., and later was with the Eastern Minnesota Power Company and then the Western Missouri Power Company.
It was in 1927 that he joined the staff of the Otter Tail Power Company. He was at Langdon as district manager until 1933 when he came to Wahpeton.
He was active in civic and community affairs here. He was a member of the American Legion; disabled American Veterans; Eagles and Odd Fellows Lodges; a 33rd degree Mason; Scottish Rite bodies and El Zagal Temple of the Shrine.
He leaves Mrs. Guess; a son, John L. in Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Fred Mason of Wayland, Mich.; a sister-in-law Mrs. John Guess of Baldwin, Wis. and two grandsons. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
