Mishap occurs Near Perham Tuesday Two Local Men Die in Accident

Funeral services for Merlin D. Christianson, 28, of Wahpeton will be 2 Saturday in Bethel Lutheran Church, Rev. Loyal E. Golf officiating.

Mr. Christianson was one of two brother-in-law killed in a car-truck crash near Perham Minn., Tuesday evening.

Funeral services for Warren Gutzmer, 25, Breckenridge, will be held at 10 Saturday in Vertin’s Wahpeton Chapel. Rev. Walter D. Elmer Officiating.

Mr. Gutzmer, was killed instantly. His body could not be removed from the wreckage until after it was towed to a Perham garage where wreckers pried the car apart. Mr. Christianson died shortly after the mishap in a Perham hospital.

The 1955 model car was demolished and scattered over the highway.

Mr. Christianson was born Oct. 12, 1936, at Rutland, N.D. He entered the Army in 1955 and was discharged in 1957 at Fort Lewis, Wash. He served in Alaska.

On June 20, 1959, he married Ruth Gutzmer at Bethel Lutheran Church and has recently been employed as a coalman at the Ottertail Power Co., Kidder Station. He previously worked at the Golf Club in Wahpeton until 1960.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Bruce and Dean at home; his father, Elmer of Rutland, His mother, Mrs. Florence Christianson, of Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Morris of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Curtis of Rutland; and a sister, Darlene of Aberdeen.

Mr. Gutzmer was born Feb 11, 1939, at Brushvale, Minn. After working in California for the past few years, he had returned to Breckenridge Minn., this spring.

He was raised in Everdell, Minn., and was last working in the Fairmount area.

He leaves his father Otto of Battle Lake, Minn.; his mother Mrs. Elroy Stoltenow of Wahpeton: four brothers, Eugene and Richard, both of Breckenridge; Gordon of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Dennis of Battle Lake and three sisters, Mrs. Christianson: Mrs. Gerald (Carol Gullickson of Portland, Ore., and Leona Gutzmer of Wahpeton.

Interment of Christianson will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Pallbearers will be Don Klosterman, Clyde Olson, Lee Stelton, Paul Kressin, Kurt Darr, and Arthur Amundson.

Organist will be Mrs. James Horton and vocalist will be James Horton.

Visitation at Vertin’s chapel for Mr. Christianson will be Friday afternoon and evening, Saturday until noon and at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Visitation for Mr. Gutzmer will be Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday until time of service.
