Olaf I. Gunness

Olaf I. Gunness, 90, Wahpeton, died Thursday at the Wahpeton Health Care Center (formerly the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center). The funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, the Rev. Marvin Hartmann officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.

Visitation is this afternoon and evening (Friday) and Saturday until 11 a.m. at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home, and at the church for the hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be Paul Quamme, Percy Strand, Donald Gunness, Odin Wold, Wallace Rustvang and Gilbert Smith.

He was born Aug. 13, 1889 at Abercrombie, the son of Engebrit and Maren Gunness. He attended local schools in the Abercrombie area, and later attended North Dakota State University, Fargo. He married Margaret Flaa Jan. 26, 1918 at Proctor, Minn. They lived in Proctor five years where he was employed as a welder with the Mesabi Railroad. He worked as a welder throughout this active life. They lived in Mooreton three years, and in Hoquiam and Seattle, Wash. a total of 25 years. They returned to North Dakota, living in Valley City for a short time. They moved to Wahpeton in 1953 where he was employed by the Olson Bearing Co. He retired in 1965. He has been a resident of the Wahpeton Health Care Center for past 8 1/2 years.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Philip (Dorothy) Broniel, Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Chester, Valley City; three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Marie) Ulteig, Tomah, Wis.; Mrs. John (Haldis) McLennan, Lake Stevens, Wash., and Mrs. William (Selma) Quine, Wahpeton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
