John Halvorson Drops Dead In Church Here
Funeral Services to Be Saturday from Bethel Lutheran Church
John Halvorson a citizen of Wahpeton for the past thirty-one years, passed away suddenly and without any warning while attending Lenten services at the Bethel Lutheran church Wednesday evening.
Mr. Halvorson was born at Winona, Minn., September 16, 1879 and was 70 years of age at the time of his death. In infancy he moved with his parents the late Johannes Halvorson’s to a farm south of Colfax N.D., where he grew to manhood. He was married to Ellen Peterson on December 1, 1905 and he took his bride to his homestead at Sherwood, N.D. where they remained for a short time, then returned to Colfax community and farmed for thirteen years before moving to Wahpeton.
He had been a faithful member of the Bethel Lutheran church since moving to Wahpeton, serving as a Deacon and trustee for many years and as custodian for eleven years. Mr. Halvorson was a carpenter by trade.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, a son, Arthur of Detroit, Mich; a daughter, Pearl (Mrs. Melvin Sunby) of Fergus Falls, Minn.; and five grandchildren – two infant daughters preceded him in death. Three brothers and two sisters also survive: Henry of Breckenridge Minn.; Ole of Talley, N.D.; Sigvald of Sherwood, N.D.; Mrs. Bertina Lind of Minot, N.D.; and Mrs. O. C. Ness of Christine, N.D.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at one o’clock at the Bethel Lutheran church. Rev. P.A. Gisvold will officiate at the service and interment will be at the Fairview cemetery. The body is at Schmitt and Olson chapel.
