Obituary

Carrie Hanson-1912

After coming to Wahpeton Mr. and Mrs. Hanson united with the Congregational church, and though less of actual service could be given; strength, as long as possible, and money were freely given in the work she loved.

While health permitted, Mrs. Hanson was a helpful member of the Fortnightly Club, being one of the Chapter members. The beginning of our little Public Library was due to her efforts. Starting with eight or ten books, she increased the number, loaning for a small rental, with which more books were purchased, until between 50 and 60 books were turned over to the clubs as the nucleus toward a Public Library.

The beautiful floral gifts testify as to how Mrs. Hanson will be missed by many friends in Wahpeton and elsewhere. Rev. E. D. Gallagher officiated at the funeral service held Monday. Mrs. Meckstroth, Mrs. Bassett, Mr. Barnes, and Mr. Clipfell formed the choir. No more appropriate song could have been sung at the close of her life than the solo, “MyAine Corutrie” rendered so touchingly by Mrs. Meckstroth.

Aside from relatives in Wahpeton, Mrs. W. R. Purdon, Ethel and Arthur Purdon; one brother, Mr. O. N. Barber of Cleveland, O., two grandchildren, Mr. Arthur Barnes and Mrs. Belle Barnes McGlinchy, and two great-grandchildren of Willoughtby, O., survive her.

Mrs. C. M. Hanson, who has been ill many weeks, died at the home of Major and Mrs. W. R. Purdon, Friday, Jan 26, 1912. She had been failing for months and her death was not unexpected by the family. Caroline Barber Hanson was born in Mentor, Ohio, Aug 26, 1836. She was educated for the work of teaching which she did successfully in Chester, Mentor and Painesville. In 1859 she was married to Wm. M. Hanson and soon afterward they moved to Willoughby, Ohio. Two daughter were born to them, the eldest having died.
