Obituary

L.M. Harris, Local Merchant Dies Saturday

Linton M. Harris, 67, Wahpeton, one-time owner of Linn’s here and a prominent war veteran died at St. Francis Hospital at 3:30 pm. Saturday. He had been in the hospital since June 12. Funeral services are to be conducted from Trinity Episcopal church at 10 Thursday morning and burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Friends may visit the Schmitt & Poulton chapel Wednesday afternoon and evening. The casket will not be opened at the church. Pastor Harold Jones will officiate at the church. H. V. White will conduct Masonic services following and the American Legion will be in charge of graveside rites at Fairview cemetery. Born at Newberry, Michigan, June 22, 1889, Mr. Harris came to Wahpeton to work for the Wegener Candy Company in 1913. He was employed there in 1916 when Company I left for the Mexican border. He entered service June 20, 1916. He was a fine and capable non-commissioned officer, according to his comrades in Company I. He was on the Mexican border from Jun 1916, to February, 1917. He returned briefly and was employed by the Globe Gazette Printing company but returned to service as Supply Sergeant with Company I and went to Camp Greene, North Carolina, to Camp Mills, New York and went overseas from Camp Merritt, New jersey, Dec 15, 1917. He was mustered out of service March 12th 1919.

He was employed by the Globe Gazette Printing company and store manager for several years until he opened his own confectionery store in which is now the Penney building. When the Penney store opened in that building about 20 years ago; Mr. Harris travelled with a pony, he had with a carnival but returned to the confectionery business which he enjoyed and opened a place where the Bon-E-Mae Cleaners are now located.

Nearly 17 years, ago he opened the present Harold’s Café in the Pfister building and owned and operated it successfully as Linn’s Café until about two years ago when he was forced to sell because of failing health. He was a popular businessman of the community, a prominent Mason, of which he was a Past Master and an officer in all of the Masonic bodies of the community. He had served as president of the Company I Association.

He was a member of Wahpeton Lodge No. 15., A.F.A.M. Wahpeton Chapter 2, Royal Arch Masons, Wahpeton Knights Templar Dakota Consistory of Fargo, El Zagel Temple of the Shrine, Fergus Falls Area Shrine club. Wahpeton Lodge I.O.O.F., a member of the American Legion of Wahpeton for 37 years, a member of the United Mexican War Veterans and International War Veterans Alliance. He was active in the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce and other community affairs.

A.N. Paulsrud will be soloist and Mrs. Fred Brown will be accompanist at the rites Thursday. Schmitt & Poulton are in charge of services.

Mr. Harris is survived by his brothers, Leighton of Almont, Mich., Perry L. of North Hollywood, Calif., and Logan of Newberry, Mich., His parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Harris preceded him in death.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. H.M. Pfister, Geo. J. Fischer, R. J. Hughes, H.V. White, Wallace Morden and Leo Gilles. Honorary pallbearers from the American Legion will be Sam Lock, John Quinn, Victor Burton, Ralph Reubusch, Harley Swanson, Julian Pope, Alfred Muchvitch, Melvin Olson, Frank Welch, Frank Matejka R., Ernest Nickel, B.P. McCuster, Lyle St. John, Rudy Beling, Oscar Krueger, Steve Chipers, George Wegner, Lester Stern, Clifford Johnson Claud Fleenor and Patrick Goggin.

Honorary pallbearers from the Masonic Lodge will be Arthur Ulness, Clifford Miller, Carl Gauslow, Donald Lum, Earl Robinson, Barney Olson, Joseph B. Stern, Elmer Ottis, Eldon Lum, B.J. Williams, Harold Nunns, Leo Dominic, International Falls, Minn., J. C. Eango, Pomona, Calif., and Allen Forman of St Paul.
